Menu Foods delays filing of financial statements

TORONTO, May 10 (Reuters) - Menu Foods Income Fund MEW_u.TO said on Thursday it will not meet the May 15 deadline under Canadian securities law for the filing of interim financial statements for the quarter to March 31.

The pet food maker — at the center of a massive recall due to tainted wheat gluten imported from China — said the delay was primarily due to ongoing discussions with lenders over additional financing for, among other things, product recalls.

Wheat gluten and rice protein imported from China and used in some pet foods were found to be tainted with the chemical melamine, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The melamine was first found in March in wheat gluten used by Canadian-based Menu Foods, and could have caused the deaths of 16 cats and dogs, FDA officials have said.
