8th Circuit reinstates verdict against GM over seatbelt

A federal appeals court has revived a verdict against General Motors and ordered a new trial on damages in a lawsuit claiming one of the company’s seatbelt systems caused car crash injuries that left a man a quadriplegic.

The three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in a unanimous decision on Thursday said the lower court erred in overruling a jury finding and setting aside the $1 million verdict. The panel also agreed a new trial for damages was warranted on the grounds that the award was “shockingly inadequate.”
