UPDATE 1-KBC has very good liquidity -Belgian central bank

BRUSSELS, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Belgian banking and insurance group KBC KBC.BR has very good liquidity and solvency and is one of the best banks in Europe, the Belgian central bank said in a statement on Thursday.

Central Bank Governor Guy Quaden had said at a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that apparently healthy banks might come under attack in the coming days, such was the extent of the financial crisis.

Certain Belgian media took that as alluding to KBC, given that Belgian-based rivals Fortis FOR.BR and Dexia DEXI.BR were already in trouble. KBC's shares hit a near five-year low on Wednesday. They were down a further 2.3 percent at 42 euros by 1021 GMT on Thursday.

“The governor of the national bank would like to make clear that in his answer to a question ... he wanted to stress the gravity of the international situation and the present irrationality of the financial markets and he in no way referred to any specific bank, Belgian or otherwise, as his answer has been misinterpreted by some media,” the statement from the central bank said.

It was not the intention of the governor to refer to KBC, a bank with a very good liquidity and solvency position that is very well managed and which the governor considers as one of the best in Europe,” the statement continued. (Reporting by Philip Blenkinsop; Editing by Greg Mahlich)
