UPDATE 1-SNC Lavalin gets S.Africa nuclear plant contract

TORONTO, Aug 22 (Reuters) - SNC-Lavalin's SNC.TO nuclear power joint venture has won a C$253 million ($241.8 million) contract to provide engineering and other services for the second phase of South Africa's Pebble Bed modular reactor demonstration plant.

The Montreal-based engineering company said on Friday its Murray and Roberts SNC-Lavalin Nuclear group will provide provide engineering, procurement, project and construction management services for phase 2 of the commercial power plant at Koeberg, near Cape Town.

Commissioning of the commercial-scale plant is subject to a nuclear license being issued by the National Nuclear Regulator and environmental approvals.

The power plant is slated to be completed by September 2014 and is designed to provide about 165 megawatts of electrical power to South Africa’s national grid. ($1=$1.05 Canadian) (Reporting by Scott Anderson; Editing by Peter Galloway)
