PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - France Telecom FTE.PA did not offer to buy Deutsche Telekom's DTEGn.DE T-Mobile UK, a spokesman said on Tuesday, after a newspaper reported the company was understood to have made an offer that was rebuffed.
“We have made no offer for T-Mobile and ... we have not been asked to make an offer,” the spokesman said, in response to the article in Britain’s Observer newspaper.
A poor performance by T-Mobile UK, the fourth-biggest mobile operator in Britain’s crowded market, has fuelled speculation that Deutsche Telekom might sell the unit.
The finance chief of France Telecom, owner of the Orange brand, told Reuters earlier this month he was not interested in buying T-Mobile UK and in any case understood it was not for sale. (Reporting by Cyril Altmeyer; Editing by David Holmes)
