Japan govt raps Cosmo Oil for refinery fire after quake

TOKYO, June 30 (Reuters) - Japan’s trade ministry on Thursday slapped Cosmo Oil Co with an administrative sanction after some LPG tanks at its Chiba refinery caught fire following the March 11 earthquake.

The fire was allowed to spread outside the refinery and the emergency shut-down functions for Cosmo Oil LPG facilities failed to operate properly, the ministry said, adding that local authorities had also ordered that the use of the LPG facilities should be suspended.

The oil refiner will no longer be allowed to carry out its own inspections and will need to shut all units at the refinery for maintenance once a year for the next two years, a ministry official said. (Reporting by Osamu Tsukimori; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)
