Reuters wins reporting award for Africa Web site

LONDON (Reuters) - Reuters Africa Web site -- africa.reuters.com -- has won the best site award at the Diageo Africa Business Reporting awards.

Reuters Africa, which showcases Reuters extensive coverage of the continent and offers breaking news, in-depth features and financial information from across the region, launched in February 2007.

The site targets the African business community and anyone who follows African development, investment and news.

John Chiahemen, editor of Reuters Africa, said: “Reuters has long been committed to covering Africa in-depth, and to helping establish a robust business environment on the African continent through our unmatched news, analysis and financial data.

“We are delighted that Reuters Africa has been recognised for our efforts to showcase that coverage in a 21st century format.”

Reuters Africa features an interactive map offering access to local Reuters news across the continent, organised by country.

As part of Reuters continuing efforts to incorporate a wider set of voices and commentary into its news content, the site includes a continent-wide network of bloggers.

In June, Reuters announced a major 3-year advertising deal with pan-African bank Ecobank Transnational Incorporated ETI.L, the most significant deal since Reuters Africa partnered with HSBC on its launch.

Tim Faircliff, Reuters General Manager for Consumer Media, UK & EMEA, said: “We are extremely proud to have received the Diageo Africa Business Reporting Award for best Web site.

“In the 5 months since its launch, Reuters Africa has quickly established itself as the leading pan-African news and financial data portal, and is a key part of Reuters’ strategy to build our global online audience.”
