Russia signs gas supply deal with Azerbaijan

BAKU, June 29 (Reuters) - Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom (GAZP.MM) signed a gas supply deal with Azerbaijan on Monday, though the terms of the agreement remain unclear, a Reuters witness at the signing ceremony said.

Russia wants to secure Azeri gas supplies to fill its South Stream gas pipeline to Europe. The European Union has also been courting the government in Baku to provide a gas source for the EU-backed Nabucco pipeline, which circumvents Russia. (Reporting by Denis Dyomkin, writing by Simon Shuster)
