BEIJING, March 1 (Reuters) - Top Chinese automaker SAIC Motor Corp (600104.SS) said it will start selling its first premier light commercial van, the MAXUS Datong, globally in the second half of this year.
SAIC did not provide a sales target in an emailed statement, but its overall annual commercial capacity is estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 units by 2015.
MAXUS Datong, which was developed based on the technologies acquired from British commercial maker LCD in 2009, will broaden its commercial vehicle portfolio that now includes heavy and light duty trucks and buses.
SAIC is the only Chinese automaker to have gained some inroads in the country’s lucrative mid-to-higher end car market that is dominated by global players.
Sales of its Roewe and MG sedans surged 78 percent from a year earlier, outperforming a 33 percent gain in the overall market, official data showed.
