Soccer-Anelka tops Premier League scoring charts

LONDON, May 24 (Reuters) - Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka clinched the Premier League’s Golden Boot award with a stunning goal in the 3-2 victory at Sunderland on Sunday.

The Frenchman took his league tally for the season to 19 when he opened the scoring just after halftime, taking possession of the ball 40 metres out before moving forward and striking an unstoppable shot into the net.

It took him clear at the top of the scoring charts, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo who was rested for Manchester United’s final game of the season at Hull City.

Chelsea’s victory marked the end of Guus Hiddink’s brief spell as a Premier League manager, although he will say farewell next week when his side plays Everton in the FA Cup final.

“I enjoyed it very much and I know it from the inside now,” Russia coach Hiddink, who has suffered just one league defeat since taking over from Luiz Felipe Scolari in February, told the BBC.

“I will come back, but first of all as a tourist... I go now to my other job. I enjoyed the reaction, it’s a perfect football country.

“We finished off with a good win today and finished off with a world-class goal from Anelka,” the Dutchman added of Anelka who has flourished under the Dutchman.

“It will mean a lot to him. It was a terrific attack, it was not just Anelka who did it the team work was fantastic.”
