ZAGREB, April 3 (Reuters) - Zadar winger Hrvoje Custic died on Thursday after hitting his head on a concrete wall during a Croatian championship match last weekend, state news agency Hina reported.
Custic, 24, was going for the ball during Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Cibalia Vinkovci when he slid off the pitch and hit the wall which was two metres from the touchline.
He underwent immediate surgery but died five days later at a Zadar hospital.
“Custic died of a serious brain injury,” a doctor at the Zadar hospital told reporters.
Custic had briefly played for two other first division teams, Hajduk Split and FC Zagreb. (Reporting by Igor Ilic; Editing by Sonia Oxley)
