(Adds details, Ericsson response)
TOKYO/STOCKHOLM, July 30 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) needs to extend financial support to Sony Ericsson, its mobile phone handset joint venture with Ericsson (ERICb.ST), Sony Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda said on Thursday.
In response to a question at a results briefing about the mobile phone venture, Oneda also said Sony would cooperate with Ericsson on any financial backing, which could be in the form of fresh investment or a loan from its parent firms or banks.
Ericsson reiterated it will continue to support the loss-making joint venture, but did not give further details.
“We will remain committed to the jv and if necessary including financial support,” Ericsson spokesman Fredrik Hallstan wrote in an e-mail to Reuters.
