Spain to permanently close nuclear power station Garona

MADRID, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Spain will permanently close the aging nuclear power station Santa Maria de Garona, the Energy Minister Alvaro Nadal said on Tuesday, explaining that the shutting down of the 466 megawatt (MW) reactor would have no effect on the Spanish power system.

The nuclear reactor, located in the northern region of Burgos, has not been active since 2012 and is the oldest nuclear power station in Spain at over 40 years.

Garona is run by Endesa and Iberdrola which in 2014 requested an extension of the licence to 2031.
