(Oil ministry corrects earlier statement that Desert Minerals was Russian)

CAIRO, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Sudan signed an agreement with Russian companies to build a refinery on the Red Sea in Port Sudan with a capacity of 222,000 barrels per day, the oil ministry said on Thursday.

It did not name the companies.

The oil ministry said it also signed an agreement with Desert Minerals, which it said was an Armenian company, to mine for gold and other minerals in Sudan’s Red Sea state. (Reporting by Khalid Abdelaziz; Writing by Yousef Saba; Editing by Adrian Croft)
