LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Comedy Central has renewed “Important Things With Demetri Martin” for a second season.
Because of Martin’s feature-film commitment -- he is set to co-star opposite Brad Pitt in Steven Soderbergh’s drama “Moneyball,” slated to begin production in the summer -- the second season of “Important Things” is being eyed for an early 2010 premiere.
Production on the series is expected to move from New York, where the first season was shot, to Los Angeles; the comedian recently relocated from the Big Apple to California.
Martin is the creator, executive producer, star, writer and composer of “Important Things,” which mixes stand-up comedy, sketches, animation, studio bits and music to explore one “important thing” per episode. Past topics have included power, safety and chairs.
“Important Things” hails from Jon Stewart’s Busboy Prods., which has emerged as Comedy Central’s top programing supplier, with three hit series on the air -- the other two being “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report.”
Martin’s original deal with Busboy was for a scripted narrative comedy, but that quickly changed after Comedy Central brass saw his 2007 special for the network, “Demetri Martin. Person,” which became a template for his series.
The first season of “Important Things,” which wrapped March 25, averaged 2.3 million total viewers and ranked as the top series in its time slot -- cable or network -- among men 18-34.
An average 2.8 million total viewers tuned in February 11 for the “Important Things” debut, making it Comedy Central’s most-watched series premiere since “Chappelle’s Show” in 2003.
