First lock on Mississippi River closes amid flood

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The first lock and dam on the upper Mississippi River closed to barge traffic on Thursday due to flood conditions that have destroyed homes and thousands of acres of corn and soybeans, said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Lock and Dam 17 in New Boston, Illinois, closed at 3:53 a.m. EDT).
