ASHGABAT, June 10 (Reuters) - Russia paid about $300 million for gas imported from Turkmenistan last year, the Russian ambassador to the Central Asian nation said on Wednesday, disclosing financial details of the contract for the first time.
Russia’s Gazprom struck a deal last July to buy up to 5.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas annually from the former Soviet republic, up from 1.155 bcm in the preceding months under a short-term deal.
The sides have not disclosed the price agreed under the contract.
Ambassador Alexander Blokhin told a briefing that gas purchases came on top of $696 million in trade turnover between the two countries, bringing the total to about $1 billion. (Reporting by Marat Gurt Writing by Olzhas Auyezov Editing by David Goodman )
