MIAMI (Reuters) - The New York Mets have suffered another injury setback with left-handed starter Oliver Perez ruled out for the season.
The Mets said on their website (www.newyork.mets.mlb.com) that Perez had patellar tendonitis in his right knee and would undergo season-ending surgery.
Team medical director David Atlchek examined Perez on Wednesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and the team say they expect Perez to be ready for spring training.
The Mets placed Perez on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Lance Broadway from Triple-A team Buffalo.
The news comes a day after pitcher Johan Santana was ruled out for the season due to surgery on his elbow.
The Mets are well outside the playoff positions, next to bottom of the National League East.
