Oregon C Dante to miss nine games with eligibility issue

Oregon’s top rated recruit, five-star center N’Faly Dante, will be ineligible for the first nine games of the season.

The NCAA missed his clearance date, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. Oregon began fall classes two weeks ago.

Dante will now be looking to enroll on Dec. 14 and begin playing for the Ducks, who are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance and were picked to win the Pac-12 this season in the league’s media poll last week.

“I left my home four years ago with a dream and three goals: graduate from high school, attend university, and play college basketball. None of that has changed. On December 14, 2019, I plan to enroll and play college basketball with the University of Oregon,” Dante said in a release to Charania. “I have completed my academic requirements and am currently waiting for the NCAA Eligibility process to finalize. We are hopeful this will conclude soon and have asked the NCAA to keep my goal of a December 14, 2019 enrollment date in mind.

“Every prospective student athlete that purchases an NCAA Eligibility Center ID, regardless of their gender or origin, should be entitled to a timely and transparent process that’s in line with the student’s targeted enrollment date.”

Dante, a 6-foot-11 center from Mali who attended Sunrise Christian in Wichita, Kan., committed to Oregon in August after reclassifying from the 2020 recruiting class to 2019. He is rated as the 14th-best prospect for the 2019 class in the 247Sports composite rankings.

He chose coach Dana Altman’s Ducks over offers from Kentucky, LSU and Kansas.

Dante would miss games against Fresno State, Boise State, Memphis, UT Arlington, Houston, Seton Hall (and two other games in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament) and Hawaii. Oregon plays at Michigan on Dec. 14, so it’s not likely Dante would be ready for that for that one, either.

Oregon begins Pac-12 play on Jan. 2 at Colorado.
