Two people jump from New York bridge

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A man and a woman jumped from New York’s Tappan Zee Bridge on Tuesday, state police said.

Police did not have immediate details on their conditions and would not confirm local media reports that the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and that the man survived the fall and was taken to a nearby hospital.

The bridge spans the Hudson River about 25 miles north of New York City. The New York State Thruway Authority, which operates the bridge, referred all questions about the morning’s incident to the state police.

The authority raised the height of the bridge’s barriers in the last year or so to make it harder for people to jump or fall, said R.W. Groneman, an authority spokesman. There are also telephones placed along the bridge that connect with suicide-prevention counselors.
