Showbiz people briefs

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Jessica Chastain has booked the female lead opposite Sam Worthington in “The Fields,” a thriller being directed by Ami Canaan Mann.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is also in the project.

Written by Don Ferrarone, the story is set in an area of coastal Texas that’s dotted with oil refineries and known to locals as the Fields. There, a homicide detective (Worthington) fights two sets of fierce killers to save the life of a street kid named Little Anne.

Chastain plays Worthington’s ex-wife, a former rodeo queen who likewise is a homicide detective and determined to the find the killers, with or without his help.

Chastain just began shooting Ralph Fiennes’ adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” with Gerard Butler. She had a career breakthrough when Terrence Malick cast her as Brad Pitt’s wife in “The Tree of Life,” which will be released later this year.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Irish actress Michelle Fairley has been tapped for a co-starring role on HBO’s much-buzzed-about new fantasy series, “Game of Thrones,” an adaptation of the George R.R. Martin book series.

The project, recently picked up as a series that will premiere next spring, is a sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros that concerns the noble Stark family, who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king’s right-hand man.

Fairley will play Catelyn Stark, Eddard Stark’s wife, who originally was betrothed to his older brother. When the older brother is killed, she fulfills her duty by marrying Eddard and securing the alliance between their two houses.

She replaces Jennifer Ehle, who played the role in the pilot.

Production on the show’s nine-episode order will begin in Belfast this June. Leading the large ensemble cast are Bean, Lena Headey, Mark Addy, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

Fairley, who is little known in the U.S., will play Mrs. Granger in the final two “Harry Potter” movies.
