(Reuters) - Lord Justice Scott Baker has begun his summary to the jury at the inquest into Princess Diana and Dodi al-Fayed after almost six months and more than 250 witnesses.
Here are some key quotes and statements made or read out at the inquest at London’s High Court.
“There is no evidence that the Duke of Edinburgh ordered Diana’s execution and there is no evidence that the security intelligence services or any other government agency ordered it.”
“They cleared the decks. They finished her. They murdered her. It was slaughter, not murder.”
RICHARD DEARLOVE, BRITAIN‘S FORMER SPY CHIEF
“This is such an absurd allegation that it is difficult to deal with ... It’s completely off the map”, he said when asked about allegations Prince Philip and Britain’s intelligence agencies were responsible for the deaths.
“If invited, I will always do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability, but I am quite ready to concede that I have no talents as a marriage counselor!!!”
”Dearest Pa, I was particularly touched by your most recent letter which proved to me, if I didn’t already know it, that you really do care.
“You are very modest about your marriage guidance skills and I disagree with you.”
“Diana told me on the phone she was pregnant. I am the only person they told. They told me they were engaged and would announce their engagement on Monday morning (three days after the crash).”
”She could not possibly have been pregnant. While we were on the boat, she had her period and that was just 10 days before she died.
“It was clear to me that she was really missing (former lover) Hasnat Khan and that I think Dodi was a distraction from the hurt that she felt from the break-up of that relationship.”
RAINE, COUNTESS SPENCER, DIANA‘S STEPMOTHER
”Diana was madly in love (with Dodi).
“She said she had never been so happy for years. That was the moment I really felt it was highly likely that she and Dodi would get engaged and then get married.”
TREVOR REES, DODI‘S FORMER BODYGUARD AND SOLE SURVIVOR OF
“I am not part of any conspiracy to suppress the truth.”
“She moved, her eyes were open, speaking to me in a foreign language. I think that she said ‘My God’ on seeing her boyfriend dying.”
“No, I did not” - asked if he saw any sign of pregnancy when he carried out a post mortem.
Diana told her: “Annabel, I need marriage like a rash on my face.”
LADY SARAH MCCORQUODALE, DIANA‘S SISTER
“I believe there was a strong possibility that they might have married.” (about Diana’s relationship with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan)
HASNAT KHAN, DIANA‘S FORMER LOVER
“My main concern about us getting married was that my life would be hell because of who she was.”
PAUL BURRELL, DIANA‘S FORMER BUTLER
“Quite frankly, it’s been horrid. It’s been quite disgraceful actually. ... I didn’t expect it to go to such depths.” (speaking about the inquest)
PAUL CONDON, FORMER HEAD OF LONDON‘S METROPOLITAN POLICE
“If, as it was my wish, she had had police protection in Paris, then I am absolutely convinced those three lives would not have been tragically lost.”
