Arrest in robbery of baseball stadium usher after heart attack

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - A teenager was charged with picking the pockets and stealing the car of a baseball stadium usher who had pulled off the road after work because he was apparently having a heart attack, police said on Wednesday.

Michael Schact, 58, was found unresponsive on Pittsburgh’s North Side after he left PNC Park in the early hours of April 9 following a 14-inning Pirates baseball game, police Lieutenant Kevin Kraus said.

Schacht had scrapes on his head and arms and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, Kraus said.

Investigators determined that Schact had stopped on his way home from work due to an apparent heart attack. He was slumped over in his 2002 Hyundai Sonata when a 17-year-old man approached and knocked on the window, Kraus said.

When Schact didn’t respond, the teen allegedly pulled him out of the car, went through his pockets and stole his wallet before driving away in the car, leaving Schact on the ground. A day later, police found the car and discovered the wallet in a nearby sewer, Kraus said.

Investigators tracked down the suspect with the help of information gleaned from an iPod the suspect left at the scene, he said.

Police arrested the teenager, who was not identified because he is a minor, on Tuesday afternoon on charges of robbery of a motor vehicle and other offenses. He was taken to a juvenile detention facility.
