Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman speech

CAIRO (Reuters) - Here is the text of Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman’s address to the nation on Thursday after President Hosni Mubarak said he would hand over powers to his deputy.

“Fellow citizens, in this decisive moment in the history of the nation, I call on all honorable Egyptians, concerned for the safety and stability of the Egypt, to be governed by reason and to look to the future.

“The January 25 youth movement has succeeded in pushing major change toward the path of democracy and change has indeed begun, constitutional decisions have been made, and all necessary committees to implement the president’s decisions have been formed.

“What the president has announced today shows his lenience toward the legitimate calls of the people and his commitment to his promises and vows of reform. He has also shown his awareness of the precise circumstances which Egypt is in.

“The president has put national interests above all other considerations.

“The president has assigned me with the responsibility to the national duty of protecting the stability and the safety of the country, to protect its properties and to bring back peace of mind to all Egyptians and to return normalcy to the country.

“I call on everyone to participate in helping achieving this and I have no doubt that the Egyptian people are capable of protecting their interests.

“We have opened the door for discussion and we have reached understanding and we have set a road map to achieving most of the demands, in line with the allowed for time frame and the door for dialogue is still open. From this, I reaffirm my commitment to do all that is necessary to achieve peaceful transfer of power and in line with the constitutional order. I announce my commitment to implementing all that was agreed upon in national dialogue:

“The protection of the revolution of the youth and its achievements, and working on regaining trust between us, while respecting the constitution and to achieve the demands of the people through national dialogue.

“I call on citizens to look to the future. It is in our hands to make it a bright and prosperous future of freedom and democracy. This heroic nation will not ever be dragged into the dangers of chaos and will not allow for those with agendas of destruction to have their presence felt amongst us.

“Let us walk together toward a new road that achieves the hopes of the people and provides them with a secure, stable, and filled with love for the nation, that deserves to be protected.

“Youth of Egypt, heroes of Egypt, go home and go to work so that we can build and create.

“Do not listen to the stations and the satellites that have no goal other than sedition and to weaken Egypt’s image and its image.

“You should listen to your conscience and your reason and consider the dangers that surround you. We have started work, reliant on God, the country’s institutions and at their forefront, the army forces — which has protected the revolution of the youth and protected the nation and the legitimacy of the constitution.

“These people have the ability to overcome the hardships and confront challenges. We will work in the spirit of team and with the solid determination of Egyptians, who are unshakeable. I have sworn to God and pledge to you to work for the sake of this nation with all my capabilities to maintain its safety and prosperity.”
