"The Sopranos" wins Emmy for best drama

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Acclaimed TV gangster saga “The Sopranos” won the Emmy Award as best drama on Sunday for its final season on HBO, becoming the first American series to clinch that prize after ending its prime-time run.

The show, starring James Gandolfini as a conflicted New Jersey mob boss, was hailed by many critics as the greatest U.S. television drama of all time and ran for six seasons before leaving the airwaves in June with a curious mid-scene blackout.

“Sopranos,” which also won for best drama in 2004, prevailed on Sunday over two ABC shows -- the medical hit “Grey’s Anatomy” and courtroom series “Boston Legal” -- as well as NBC’s superhuman serial “Heroes” and the Fox hospital drama “House.”
