Celebrity stylist Lukas debuts clothing line

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - A fashion stylist who has dressed Oscar-winning actresses Halle Berry and Meryl Streep in glamorous ensembles wants to bring his expertise to the closets of every American woman - of every shape and size.

Wayne Scot Lukas, who has been a “Stylist to the Stars” for about 20 years, is now designing clothes for a broader U.S. market — although he is quick to point out that women everywhere are vulnerable to the same fashion foibles.

“The biggest fashion mistake right now is ... believing you have to live the whole trend to actually be in fashion,” Lukas told Reuters.

“If you want to do the metallic trend which is so huge now, you don’t want to walk down the street looking like a foil-wrapped baked potato. Buy the shoe, or the bag.”

Lukas, who has in the past dispensed style tips on TLC cable program “What Not To Wear,” introduces his LukaStyle label this Wednesday on shopping network HSN. The line is priced from $25 to $60 per item and relies on soft cottons and cashmere blends that can be easily washed and worn.

Lukas says his designs find flattering angles for the curviest of women, culled from more than 20 years of outfitting stars to look their best in public.

“There’s something I call the ‘Niagara Falls Back,’ when the upper weight on your back rolls over your bra strap. Well we have that covered,” he said. “I have also cut every tank top and every dress high enough so you will never see that chicken cutlet between your breast and armpit.”

Lukas joins a long line of fashion gurus, from Isaac Mizrahi to design duo Proenza Schouler, who are dressing down their expertise and pricing for large retail channels such as Target Corp(TGT.N) or Swedish retailer H&M (HMb.ST).

Lukas adds from his own resume by providing customers with a series of photos explaining how to wear his clothes, mimicking the Polaroid snapshots of outfits handed to celebrities to ensure they mix and match correctly.

Just as a snapshot of an outfit for a celebrity would be labeled with the right occasion to wear it, from “Movie Premiere” to “TV Interview,” Lukas will offer suggestions for how to dress for a wedding anniversary, or how to hide the bulge on days when a woman is not feeling her thinnest.

“With celebrities today all the talk is about them being so skinny,” said Lukas. “But you have Cathy Bates, Roseanne Barr, Meryl (Streep) who can go from a size 6 to a size 14. You all have the same body types, I guarantee it, just somebody put them together for $10,000 a day.”

One key tip from Lukas is that you can never have too much of a style that flatters.

“If your husband says ‘your ass looks great in those pants’, why are you not buying more of those pants?”
