BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany’s Martin Schulz will step down as leader of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) to become foreign minister in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s next government, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily reported on Wednesday.

SPD parliamentary floor leader Andrea Nahles stands ready take over the role of party leader in addition to her current job, the newspaper cited party members as saying.

A SPD spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied the report.
