TIMELINE:Attacks at schools in Europe

(Reuters) - A 17-year old gunman went on a shooting spree at his former school in southwest Germany on Wednesday, killing up to 15 people before dying himself in a shootout with police, authorities said.

Here are some details about previous shootings and attacks in schools in Europe:

March 1996 - BRITAIN - A gunman burst into a primary school in Dunblane in Scotland and shot dead 16 children and their teacher before killing himself.

February 2002 - GERMANY - In Freising, Bavaria, a former student who had been thrown out of trade school shot and killed three people before killing himself. Another teacher was injured.

April 26, 2002 - GERMANY - In Erfurt, eastern Germany, 19-year-old Robert Steinhauser opened fire after saying he was not going to take a maths test. He killed 12 teachers, a secretary, two pupils and a policeman at the Gutenberg Gymnasium, before killing himself.

September 1, 2004 - RUSSIA - Three hundred and thirty three hostages, at least 186 of them children, died in a chaotic storming by Russian forces of School No.1 in Beslan, after it was seized by rebels demanding Chechen independence.

November 20, 2006 - GERMANY - An 18-year-old former pupil opened fire after storming the Scholl school in the western town of Emsdetten. He wounded at least 11 people before killing himself.

November 7, 2007 - FINLAND - Pekka-Eric Auvinen killed six fellow students, the school nurse and the principal and himself with a handgun at the Jokela High School near Helsinki.

September 23, 2008 - FINLAND - Student Matti Saari opened fire in a vocational school in Kauhajoki in northwest Finland, killing nine other students and one male staff member before killing himself.

January 23, 2009 - BELGIUM - A man with a white painted face and blackened eyes fatally stabbed two infants and a woman at child care center in western Belgium.

January 23, 2009 - NORWAY - A policeman shot dead a trainee female teacher and then shot himself in what appeared to be a quarrel between former lovers outside a school in the northern town of Tromsoe. The policeman died of his wounds days later.

March 11, 2009 - GERMANY - A 17-year-old gunman dressed in black combat gear killed nine students and three teachers at the Albertville-Realschule secondary school in Winnenden near Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg state. He also killed one other person at a nearby clinic. He then fled with a hostage and was killed in a shoot-out with police. Two additional passers-by were killed and two policemen seriously injured, bringing the total death toll to 16 including the gunman.
