Factbox: New world number one Lee Westwood

(Reuters) - Factbox on Briton Lee Westwood who will take over from Tiger Woods as the world’s number one golfer when the new rankings are published on Monday.

* Born April 24, 1973, in Worksop, England.


* Westwood showed promise at rugby, cricket and soccer at school before taking up golf aged 13.

* Turned professional in 1993.


* Started slowly on the European Tour before registering his first victory in 1996 and finishing sixth on the money-list. Was no worse than third in the next three seasons before toppling Colin Montgomerie, who had been number one for seven consecutive years, in 2000.

* Won a record-equalling six tournaments in 2000, sharing the distinction with Montgomerie, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo.

* Clinched his second money-list win in the 2008-09 season.


* Westwood equaled American great Arnold Palmer’s Ryder Cup record of 12 successive matches unbeaten at Valhalla, Kentucky in 2008.

* An ever-present in the biennial team event since 1997, winning five times and losing twice.


* Finished fourth at the 2004 British Open and third at the 2008 U.S. Open after missing a 20-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole which would have put him in a playoff with eventual winner Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate.

* Tied for third at the 2009 British Open, again just one stroke off a playoff, and shared third position with Rory McIlroy at the 2009 U.S. PGA Championship in August.

* In 2010, he recorded second-placed finishes at the U.S. Masters and the British Open.


* Married fellow professional Andrew Coltart’s sister Laurae in 1999 and has two children (born in 2001 and 2004).
