InterDigital expands patent deal with RIM

TORONTO (Reuters) - Wireless technology firm InterDigital Inc (IDCC.O) said on Thursday it has extended a patent license deal with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd RIM.TORIMM.O until the end of 2012.

InterDigital also said the companies expanded the scope of their nonexclusive, global royalty-bearing agreement to cover third-generation, or 3G, products.

“This 3G patent license with RIM is another validation of the strength of our global licensing program,” InterDigital chief executive William Merritt said in a statement.

InterDigital shares were up $2.03, or 9.5 percent, at $23.40 on Nasdaq on Thursday afternoon.

RIM shares were down C$1.72 at C$112.86 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
