U.S. says NRC guidelines behind Japan evacuation advice

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The government’s recommendation that U.S. citizens who live within 50 miles of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant evacuate or take shelter indoors was based on U.S. guidelines and does not reflect any judgment of Japan’s own advisories, the State Department said Wednesday.

“We have expressed confidence throughout this in the Japanese authorities and their ability to deal with the situation,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

“This is not any kind of judgment on what the Japanese authorities are telling their public. This is based on what we would advise American citizens here to do in a similar situation,” he said, stressing that the recommendation was made according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines.
