Obama says U.S. will stand with quake-hit Japan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama reiterated U.S. offers of assistance to quake-hit Japan on Monday, saying he is heartbroken by the scenes of devastation there.

“We will stand with Japan in the difficult days ahead,” Obama said.

Television networks have been broadcasting non-stop coverage of the events in Japan and the hardships encountered by the Japanese people.

“I continue to be heartbroken by the images of devastation in Japan,” Obama said at the beginning of a speech on education.

He said the United States will continue to offer any assistance it can as Japan continues to recover from multiple disasters.
