U.S. says North Korea must do more before six-party talks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States welcomed on Thursday possible high-level military talks between North and South Korea but said Pyongyang had “a ways to go” before six-party talks on ending its nuclear programs could resume.

“We view it as a positive sign,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said of South Korea’s agreeing to the North’s offer of military talks. “It’s something that helps ease tensions in the region. We still believe that North Korea has a ways to go before we can engage in meaningful six-party talks,” Toner said.
