LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former CNN news anchor Lou Dobbs has joined the Fox Business Network and will host and develop a daily television show starting in 2011, Fox said on Wednesday.

Dobbs, 65, also will appear on a variety of other Fox Business Network programs as an analyst and commentator on the financial news of the day.

“Fox Business has always been about putting the smartest, most interesting people on television and the addition of Lou Dobbs will serve to strengthen the best lineup in business news,” the network’s executive vice-president, Ken Magee, said in a statement.

The outspoken Dobbs, whose views on illegal immigration made him one of the most controversial figures on mainstream U.S. television, spent nearly 30 years with CNN before quitting abruptly in November 2009.

He had long been expected to join Fox, but said at the time of his departure from CNN that he was considering other career options, including a possible run for the White House or the U.S. Senate.

Dobbs said in a statement on Wednesday, he was “excited and privileged” to join the network. Dobbs will continue to host his nationally syndicated radio show.

The commentator had worked with CNN since its founding in 1980. He started out as the all-news cable network’s chief business and financial correspondent and later broadened his show into a general news broadcast.

Fox Business, owned by News Corp, was launched in 2007 but has struggled against the dominance in U.S. financial TV news of rival CNBC, a unit of General Electric Co’s NBC Universal media division.

Fox Business is available in more than 50 million U.S. homes compared to about 95 million homes receiving CNBC.
