Seattle acquires Thomas, draft picks, from Phoenix

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Seattle SuperSonics acquired center Kurt Thomas and two future first-round draft picks from the Phoenix Suns on Friday in return for a future, conditional second-round pick, according to nba.com.

Phoenix will send Seattle its 2008 and 2010 first-round picks. The Suns will receive a conditional 2009 second-round pick from Seattle (via Orlando).

In addition to salary cap relief, the trade leaves Phoenix with an $8 million trade exception for use in future dealings, the Suns said on their Web site (suns.com).

“We feel good going forward having our core group of players under contract for several years, including the recent addition of free-agent Grant Hill,” said Suns general manager Steve Kerr.

“The bottom line is there are tough decisions to make but we have flexibility... we really like the group of players we’ve assembled and feel we can make a legitimate run for an NBA championship next season.”

Pacific Division champions Phoenix (61-21) had the second-best regular season record in the NBA last season, but fell to eventual champion San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference semi-finals.

Thomas, a 12-year veteran, joins a young Seattle roster that will feature rookies Kevin Durant (the second overall pick in the NBA Draft) and Jeff Green (fifth overall pick).

Thomas spent the last two seasons with the Suns after being acquired from the New York Knicks.

The 6-foot-9 Thomas, the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 1995 draft by Miami, averaged 6.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 21.8 minutes last season with Phoenix.
