Bears release Tank Johnson after latest arrest

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago Bears released defensive tackle Tank Johnson on Monday following his arrest in Arizona for speeding and suspicion of drunk driving just a few weeks after he was discharged from jail on a gun-related charge.

“We are upset and embarrassed by Tank’s actions last week,” General Manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement issued by the NFL club.

“He compromised the credibility of our organization. We made it clear to him that he had no room for error. Our goal was to help someone through a difficult period in his life but the effort needs to come from both sides. It didn’t and we have decided to move on.”

Johnson was released from an Illinois jail in May after serving 60 days for violating probation on a gun charge. Last week he was arrested in Arizona but not charged. Police there said he had been speeding and appeared to have been drinking.

In early June the league suspended him without pay for the first eight games of the forthcoming season for violating its personal conduct policy.

Last December police raided Johnson’s home and found six unregistered firearms, a violation of his probation on a gun charge stemming from a 2005 arrest after a Chicago nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his car. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

Two days after last winter’s police raid, Johnson’s bodyguard was shot and killed in an early morning fight while he and Johnson were at a Chicago nightclub.

Johnson, 25, has played in three NFL seasons after attending the University of Washington.
