Flyers back on track with win over Leafs

(Reuters) - The Philadelphia Flyers snapped a three-game losing skid by roughing up the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 at the Wells Fargo Center Thursday.

The Leafs, seventh in the Eastern Conference, lost their second consecutive game and failed to gain ground on fourth-placed Flyers.

Philadelphia’s Scott Hartnell scored the only goal of the first period, batting the puck out of the air past Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer to stake the Flyers to a deserved 1-0 lead, and immediately engaged in a fight with Maple Leafs’ captain Dion Phaneuf.

“Obviously, I was rattled up,” Hartnell told reporters. “I thought I got a cheap shot going into the boards right before I scored, but I’ll take the five minutes (penalty) and the goal, for sure.”

Philadelphia dominated the first period, outshooting Toronto 16-5.

Toronto’s Tyler Bozak leveled the score less than a minute into the second period to spark a scoring frenzy as the teams combined for five more goals in the period.

Philadelphia’s Max Talbot and Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul exchanged goals before the Flyers opened up a two-goal lead with strikes from Claude Giroux and Brayden Schenn.

“We let them dictate the pace of the game in the first and that’s not like us,” Phaneuf said.

“We’re a high-tempo, fast team and when we move the puck and skate, we are effective. We sat back too much for our liking. We fought hard to get back to 2-2.

“They came back and they scored those quick ones and it took wind out of our sail.”

Bozak scored his second of the game to reduce the deficit to 4-3 late in the period but Toronto were unable to find the equalizer in the final period.
