Hurricanes sign defenseman Kaberle to three-year deal

RALEIGH, North Carolina (Reuters) - The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a three-year, $12.75 million deal with puck-moving defenseman Tomas Kaberle, the National Hockey League (NHL) team said on Tuesday.

Kaberle, now with his second team in less than five months, heads to the Hurricanes after helping the Boston Bruins snap a 39-year Stanley Cup drought in June.

“Tomas is one of the top puck-moving defensemen in the NHL and power-play specialist,” Hurricanes General Manager Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “He has had a good career and is now a Stanley Cup champion.”

Kaberle, who was selected in the eighth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by Toronto, spent his first 12 seasons with the Maple Leafs until being dealt to Boston at the trade deadline in February.

The Czech blueliner finished the 2010-11 campaign with a combined four goals and 43 assists between the two teams and also appeared in all of Boston’s 25 playoff games where he recorded 11 assists.

In a separate move, Boston said they acquired defenseman Joe Corvo from Carolina in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.

Corvo, 34, is coming off a season where he registered 40 points while playing in all of Carolina’s 82 regular season games.
