Clay was persuaded to try the decathlon by America’s 2000 Olympic decathlon bronze medalist Chris Huffins. His silver-medal winning score of 8,820 points at the 2004 Olympics was the fourth highest decathlon total ever recorded at the Olympics and the highest not to win a gold medal. He won gold at the 2008 Olympics with a lower score of 8,791 points.
