Reuters names new correspondent to U.N. bureau

LONDON (Reuters) - Reuters on Tuesday named Patrick Worsnip, a foreign correspondent with 35 years experience, to work at its United Nations bureau in New York.

Worsnip, a Briton, will take up his assignment in April. He will succeed Evelyn Leopold as U.N. Bureau Chief when she leaves Reuters in September after a distinguished career including 17 years covering the world body.

Worsnip, now an Editor-in-Charge on the World Desk at the Reuters headquarters in London, joined the global news service as a graduate trainee in September, 1971.

He was one of the first international journalists to report from the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988 following a nerve gas attack by Iraqi government forces that killed as many as 5,000 people.

His past assignments include postings in Rome, Moscow, Warsaw, Tehran, Beirut, at the State Department in Washington and as Diplomatic Correspondent in London, from where he covered European and Middle East affairs.

“Reuters is delighted to have a journalist of Patrick’s caliber leading our coverage of the United Nations,” said Paul Holmes, Global Editor for Political and General News.

“We are fortunate that he will be able to work closely with Evelyn for several months to ensure a smooth and successful transition.”

Leopold joined Reuters in 1968 and has had assignments in Germany, Britain and Nairobi, where she was Editor for Africa.

She is a former News Editor for North America and associate global editor and returned to her native New York to join the Reuters U.N. bureau shortly before the start of the 1991 Gulf War.

Leopold plans to leave Reuters around the time of the next U.N. General Assembly to pursue other opportunities in journalism.

Her colleague at the Reuters U.N. bureau, Irwin Arieff, will retire in February after 23 years of service in Washington, Paris, New York and at the United Nations.

Arieff’s position will be filled shortly.
