NHC says 50 percent chance of cyclone forming in southwestern Gulf of Mexico

(Reuters) - An area of low pressure located over the southwestern Gulf Of Mexico has a 50 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Tuesday.

“Environmental conditions are marginally conducive for development, and this system could become a tropical depression during the next couple of days,” the NHC said.

Another low pressure system about 1000 miles (1,600 km) west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands has a 60 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours, the NHC said.
