Davis Guggenheim doc first Sundance pickup

PARK CITY, Utah (Hollywood Reporter) - Marking the first sale of the Sundance Film Festival, which kicked off Thursday, Paramount Vantage has acquired worldwide rights to Davis Guggenheim’s new documentary about the state of public education in the United States.

The film will have its world premiere Friday as part of the festival’s U.S. documentary competition, under the title “Waiting for Superman.”

It was developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, which also handled Guggenheim’s Oscar-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Paramount Vantage will release the film in the fall in the U.S., with international release dates to be determined.
