Fifth-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain recovered from a slow start to post a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 victory over Australia’s John Millman on Monday in the opening round of the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne, England.
Verdasco lost the opening set and then dropped the first 10 points of the second before beginning a strong turnaround. He won 10 of the final 11 games of the match to win in two hours, 32 minutes.
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz upset seventh-seeded Marco Cecchinato of Italy 6-4, 6-4, while three Americans advanced.
Steve Johnson defeated Reilly Opelka 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a battle of Americans while Taylor Fritz recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Britain’s Paul Jubb and Sam Querrey notched a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.
Turkish Airlines Open Antalya
Defending champion Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia dispatched Australia’s Matthew Ebden 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round at Antalya.
The fifth-seeded Dzumhur required 82 minutes to close out Ebden. He next faces Turkish wild card Altug Celikbilek, who pulled off a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis.
Sixth-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, while Australia’s Bernard Tomic racked up 24 aces as he ousted seventh-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
