No. 9 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus successfully defended her title, outlasting unseeded Alison Riske 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 at the Wuhan Open in China.
Sabalenka, who fired 18 aces in the victory, becomes the first player to repeat as champion here and the second to win two titles (Petra Kvitova is the other).
“I can’t believe that I defend this title. I couldn’t even imagine that I will be able to do this. Right now I’m just happy. I don’t know. I can’t believe it’s happened,” said Sabalenka afterward.
Riske has yet to beat Sabalenka in three career meetings. Sabalenka improved to 12-0 at the Wuhan Open.
No. 3 seed Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium held off No. 8 seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to claim the title in Uzbekistan.
It was Van Uytvanck’s first career victory over Cirstea, who won their two previous meetings.
Van Uytvanck has won all four of her finals appearances, each in three sets. Cirstea’s only career title came at this event in 2008.
