WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to back down on Thursday from putting a citizenship question on the census, instead issuing an executive order to survey the American public by other means, ABC News reported.
Trump will ask the Commerce Department, which includes the U.S. Census Bureau, to do the different survey on citizenship, ABC said, citing multiple unidentified sources.
The White House and the Department of Justice declined to comment on the report. The administration’s attempts to add the contentious question have been blocked in the courts by challenges from some U.S. states and civil rights groups.
