Wal-Mart home goods end two-year slump in May

ROGERS, Arkansas (Reuters) - Leading retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc WMT.N said on Thursday the month of May marked the first time in more than two years it had positive same-store sales in its home department.

Linda Hefner, general manager of its home department, said the retailer has had success focusing on brands like its new Canopy line of bedding.

Hefner was speaking on a tour of Wal-Mart’s stores ahead of the company’s annual meeting on Friday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

“We’re seeing great results,” with the home line, she said.

She added that in the fall, Wal-Mart will be introducing its exclusive line of Better Homes and Gardens home goods in more than 14 categories.

To make room for the line, Wal-Mart is ‘editing’ its current assortment.

“We will have fewer SKUs (stock keeping units) versus last year,” she said.
