MOSCOW (Reuters) - Three prison guards were killed on Saturday when unidentified attackers opened fire on them in Russia’s North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria, the Prosecutor General’s investigative unit said.
The unit said in a statement on its website that the attack took place near the city of Prokladnyi.
It said two women and one man were killed, and another woman wounded, when the gunmen opened automatic fire in a drive-by attack on a road outside the city. It gave no other details.
Kabardino-Balkaria is near Russia’s turbulent regions of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan but the level of violence there has been has been comparatively low.
Attacks against law-enforcement officers are frequent throughout the region, part of a surge in violence a decade after wars pitting government forces against Chechen separatists.
