Delhi, India – October 11, 2018

“Eyes are the window to the inner soul,” the eyes must be given all the attention and care for the blooming life, especially if they are dry. The dry eye sufferers may not realize that the dryness in their eyes is often caused by a Meibomian gland Dysfunction (MGD) that occurs when the Meibomian gland in the eyes get blocked and are unable to protect the tear film, which is a thin layer of fluid that covers the outer surface of the eye.

Treating MGD traditionally has been hard, but this new therapy, the thermal pulsation system, is making it far simpler to perform. It involves the use of the cutting-edge device to heat up and massages the blockage away in just 12 minutes right at the optician’s clinic. According to the Global Dry Eye Platform Leader, Joe Boorady, “Poor blinking is the most likely culprit of dry eye and MGD.”

The science of blinking is quite fascinating, every time an individual blinks, he activates the muscles by squeezing each one around his Meibomian glands causing the functional glands to secrete the droplet into the tear film, which develops a lipid layer. And, when an individual doesn’t blink frequently this layer stays stagnant. The process results into turning from olive oil consistency to more of a thick oil, leading to blockage of the gland and causing symptoms associating with that of dry eye. Researchers have found that contact lens wearers, heavy electronic device users, and postmenopausal women are more prone and are likely to be at higher risk for MGD.

But fret not, there is a treatment for it. LipidFlow is the thermal pulsation system that is intended for use in adults with obstructive Meibomian gland dysfunction. In this treatment, the heat is delivered at a temperature of 42.5 degrees to the inner eyelid, and simultaneously the pressure is applied to the outer eyelid surfaces resulting in loosening, liquefying the hardened Meibomian lipids that formed the blockage in the Meibomian glands.

The LipidFlow system has a lifespan of three years. The treatment takes 12 minutes for a single or bilateral eye treatment. Assuming that each procedure would take 20 minutes including the setup time, then approximately 20 cases can be dealt in a day. Since the treatment is new, not all the ophthalmologists prescribe or use it to treat the MGD, but this service can be soon seen at Eye7 Chaudhary Eye Centre, in India.
