Name Description

Charles Link

Dr. Charles J. Link, Jr. M.D. is the Chairman of the Board, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Scientific Officer of NewLink Genetics Corp. He founded NewLink Genetics Corporation in 1999 and has served as Chairman of the company Board of Directors and the company Chief Scientific Officer since inception in 1999. He served as the company President from 2001 to 2009 and has served as the company Chief Executive Officer since 2003. Dr. Link has also served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BioProtection Systems Corporation from 2005 and was its Chief Scientific Officer from 2005 to 2009. Dr. Link has been a practicing oncologist at the Medical Oncology and Hematology Associates of Iowa since 1995. From 1995 to 2003, Dr. Link served as the Director of the John Stoddard Cancer Research Institute, which he co-founded. Dr. Link served as a Medical Oncology Clinical Fellow at the National Cancer Institute, or NCI, National Institutes of Health, or NIH, from 1988 to 1991. Dr. Link attended the U.S. Air Force Academy from 1977 to 1980. Dr. Link holds a B.A. from Stanford University, an M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and is certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has previously been certified in Medical Oncology.

Nicholas Vahanian

Dr. Nicholas N. Vahanian, M.D. is President of NewLink Genetics Corporation. He has served as the Company's Chief Medical Officer since 2001, Chief Operations Officer since 2003 and President since 2009. Dr. Vahanian served as a research scientist at the NCI from 1992 to 1994 and at the National Center for Human Genome Research, NIH from 1994 to 1995. He completed his Molecular Oncology Fellowship at the John Stoddard Cancer Research Institute from 1999 to 2000. Dr. Vahanian holds a B.S. in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Vahanian attended St. Barthalomew's and Royal London Hospital Medical College. He also holds an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Vahanian will be on a temporary medical leave of absence effective July 28, 2017.

Carl Langren

Mr. Carl W. Langren is Chief Financial Officer of the Company. Mr. Langren has served as the Company’s Vice President of Finance since 2011 and previously served as the Chief Financial Officer of BioProtection Systems from 2005 to 2011. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Langren served as a principal in Capital Management Solutions from 2003 to 2006, the Chief Financial Officer of Housby Mixer Group from 1998 to 2002 and as President of Iowa Machinery and Supply from 1990 to 1998. Mr. Langren also served as Chief Financial Officer of Equity Dynamics, Inc., Treasurer of DFM Corporation and tax manager with McGladrey Pullen and Company (now RSM US LLP). Mr. Langren received his B.A. from the University of Iowa.

Lori Lawley

Ms. Lori Lawley is Principal Accounting Officer, Vice President - Finance, Controller of the Company. Ms. Lawley joined the Company in April 2015. At the Company, Ms. Lawley served as Manager of SEC Reporting and Accounting Policy from April 2015 until January 2017, Director of SEC and Financial Reporting from January 2017 to November 2017 and Corporate Controller from November 2017 until July 2018. Prior to joining the Company, Ms. Lawley worked as an auditor with Ernst and Young where she served in increasing capacities from 2007 through April 2015, including as Manager from October 2011 to September 2014, and Senior Manager from October 2014 until April 2015. Ms. Lawley is a licensed certified public accountant. Ms. Lawley received her Bachelor of Business Administration and Masters in Professional Accounting from the University of Texas.

John Henneman

Mr. John B. Henneman III., is Chief Administrative Officer, Secretary of Newlink Genetics Corporation. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Henneman served for sixteen years at Integra Life Sciences (“Integra”). He joined Integra in 1998 as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer, was appointed Acting Chief Financial Officer in 2007, and assumed that role permanently in 2008. As Chief Financial Officer, he transformed the finance function to accommodate Integra's growth, recruited and developed key leaders in accounting, tax, financial planning and analysis and treasury, and raised almost $1 billion in new debt and equity capital. In April 2014, he was named as Corporate Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, concurrently with the appointment of a new Chief Financial Officer. During his 16 years at Integra, in addition to his responsibilities as Chief Financial Officer, he led Integra’s business development function, playing a key role in more than 40 acquisitions and alliances, and was responsible at various times for the Company's regulatory affairs, quality systems, clinical affairs, human resources and management of Integra’s surgical instruments business. Integra is not a parent, subsidiary or other affiliate of the Company.

Eugene Kennedy

Dr. Eugene P. Kennedy, M.D., FACS is Chief Medical Officer of the Company. He joined NewLink in 2014 from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA where he served from 2006 to 2013, progressing to the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery and held leadership positions including Chief of the Section of Pancreaticobiliary Surgery and Co-Director of the Jefferson Pancreas, Biliary, and Related Cancers Center. Previously, Dr. Kennedy has held faculty positions at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD from 2004 to 2005 and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA in 2005. Dr. Kennedy obtained his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed a residency and fellowship in Surgery and Surgical Oncology as well as a research fellowship in tumor immunology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Thomas Raffin

Dr. Thomas A. Raffin, M.D., is the Lead Independent Director of NewLink Genetics Corporation. Dr. Raffin has spent 30 years on the faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he is the Colleen and Robert Haas Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Biomedical Ethics. Over the past two decades, Dr. Raffin has worked in the healthcare and medical device business sectors and was an advisor to Cell Therapeutics Inc. (1993-1997), Broncus Technologies (1997-2004), iMedica (1998-2002), and Inhale Technologies (1998-2001). He co-founded Rigel Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded company, in 1996. In 2001, he co-founded Telegraph Hill Partners, a San Francisco life sciences private equity firm as a General Partner. Dr. Raffin has been a director of the following Telegraph Hill Partners private portfolio companies: AngioScore, Confirma, Freedom Innovations, LDR, and PneumRx; and he has worked closely with Estech and Vidacare. Dr. Raffin received a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine and did his medical residency at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women's Hospital) in Boston.

Chad Johnson

Mr. Chad A. Johnson is Director of the Company. He has been General Counsel at Stine Seed Company since May 2017. From May 2015 to April 2017, Mr. Johnson was the Assistant Corporate Secretary and Senior Corporate Counsel for Renewable Energy Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGI) the largest supplier of advanced biofuels by volume in North America. In addition to his role as a corporate officer, Mr. Johnson was a senior in-house attorney for the company where he helped advance the company’s strategic expansion into Europe and other merger and acquisition activities, managed the company’s intellectual property portfolio and managed the legal aspects of the company’s securities and public filings. From 2007 - 2015 he spent eight years in roles of increasing responsibility at DuPont Pioneer, a subsidiary of DuPont and a global leading seed and agriculture biotechnology company. In those roles, Mr. Johnson provided legal guidance to a variety of businesses in connection with mergers and acquisitions, strategic collaborations with industry partners and compliance initiatives. Mr. Johnson is admitted to practice law in the state of Iowa and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Johnson graduated from Iowa State University with a Master of Science in Crop Production and Physiology and received his J.D. from Drake University Law School.

Matthew Sherman

Dr. Matthew L. Sherman is Director of the Company. Prior to joining Acceleron, Dr. Sherman was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp. from 2004 to 2006 where he provided executive leadership for clinical research, clinical operations, and program management among other areas of responsibility. During his tenure there, Dr. Sherman built the clinical development organization and initiated 16 studies overall, including five new Phase 2 clinical trials. From 1991 to 2004, Dr. Sherman held various leadership positions at Wyeth-Ayerst Research and Genetics Institute (acquired by Wyeth/American Home Products in 1997) in Clinical Research and Development where among other achievements he led the successful process from submission to FDA approval of the first antibody immune-drug conjugate for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Dr. Sherman received an S.B. degree in Chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA and an M.D. degree with Honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH. Dr. Sherman is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine and held various clinical and teaching positions at Harvard Medical School with corresponding hospital appointments at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. He has published over 220 original papers, book chapters, reviews and abstracts in basic research and clinical development and is named as an inventor of ten patents. Dr. Sherman serves on the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth Board of Advisors and Alumni Council and on the Marine Biological Laboratory Council (Woods Hole, MA), affiliate of the University of Chicago.

Ernest Talarico

Mr. Ernest J. Talarico, III, is an Independent Director of NewLink Genetics Corporation. Mr. Talarico has worked for Mesirow Financial Holdings, Inc., a diversified financial services firm headquartered in Chicago, Illinois since 1998, where he has been a Managing Director since June 2008. Prior to becoming Managing Director, Mr. Talarico served as Senior Vice President from 2005 to 2008, Vice President from 2003 to 2005 and Investment Executive from 1998 to 2003. Mr. Talarico specializes in financial planning and asset allocation, as well as other accumulation and preservation strategies for individuals and businesses. Mr. Talarico sits on several boards and committees, including the Mutual Fund Committee at Mesirow Financial and the Select Advisory Board and Committee at Mesirow Financial. Mr. Talarico has also been the Chairman for the local chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Founder and Chairman of the Talarico Ataxia Foundation. Mr. Talarico holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa as well as licenses in equities, options and managed futures.

Lota Zoth

Ms. Lota S. Zoth CPA., is an Independent Director NewLink Genetics Corporation., since November 2, 2012. Ms. Zoth served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of MedImmune, Inc. from April 2004 to July 2007 and also served as its Controller and Principal Accounting Officer. Prior to joining MedImmune in 2002, Ms. Zoth served as Senior Vice President, Corporate Controller and Principal Accounting Officer at PSINet Inc., and Vice President, Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer at Sodexho Marriott Services, Inc. Ms. Zoth also held senior management positions at Marriott International and PepsiCo, Inc. Ms. Zoth served as an auditor at Ernst & Young, LLP and is a Certified Public Accountant. Ms. Zoth is a member of the Boards of Directors of Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc., Hyperion Therapeutics, Inc., one private company and one non-profit organization. Ms. Zoth received a B.B.A. in accounting, summa cum laude, from Texas Tech University.
