Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (Cinemark), incorporated on August 2, 2006, is engaged in the motion picture exhibition business with theatres in the United States (U.S.), Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Paraguay, Curacao and Bolivia. The Company manages its business in two segments: U.S. markets and international markets. The international segment consists of operations in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Bolivia, Curacao and Paraguay. As of December 31, 2016, the Company operated 526 theatres and 5,903 screens in the United States and Latin America. As of December 31, 2016, its the United States circuit had 339 theatres and 4,559 screens in 41 states and its international circuit had 187 theatres and 1,344 screens in 15 countries. It develops new platforms for its theatre circuit, such as XD, Cinemark Reserve, Luxury Lounger reclining seats, CineArts and other concepts. It plays mainstream films from various genres, such as animated films, family films, dramas, comedies, horror and action films. It offers content in both two-dimension (2D) and three-dimension (3D) formats in all of its theatres.
The Company's XD auditorium utilizes the digital projection and custom sound, including a Barco Auro 11.1 sound system or Dolby Atmos in select locations. The XD experience includes wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor screens, wrap-around sound and seating. As of December 31, 2016, it had 225 XD auditoriums in its circuit. Its Movie Bistro locations offer in-theatre dining with food offerings, such as wraps, sandwiches, burgers, and gourmet pizzas, and a selection of beers, wines and frozen cocktails. Its CineArts locations provide moviegoers with the selection of art and independent cinema. As of December 31, 2016, it had 14 domestic theatres that are dedicated to art and independent content, and 58 of its other domestic theatres offer art and independent films on a limited basis. Digital projection allows the Company to present 3D content and alternative entertainment, such as live and pre-recorded sports programs, concert events, the Metropolitan Opera, gaming events and other special presentations.
The Company also offers local film product in its international markets, providing film choices to its patrons. It offers a Classic Series at its United States theatres and some of its international theatres, which involves playing digitally re-mastered classic movies that change on a weekly basis. The Company's Fathom event business focuses on the marketing and distribution of live and pre-recorded entertainment programming to movie theatres to augment theatres' feature film schedules. It also has lobby bars and very important person (VIP) lounges in certain domestic theatres. In its domestic markets, the Company's theatres are part of the in-theatre digital network operated by National CineMedia, LLC (NCM). NCM provides advertising to its theatres through its branded First Look pre-feature entertainment program, and also handles lobby promotions and displays for its theatres. Its CineMode, which is a function within the application it developed, allows patrons the opportunity to earn rewards while being courteous during a show. While in CineMode, the phone's screen is automatically dimmed and patrons are prompted to silence their volume. If CineMode is enabled for the duration of the movie, patrons are rewarded with digital rewards and offers that can be used at their next visit to Cinemark.
The Company competes with Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Entertainment, Inc., Cinepolis, Cine Colombia, CinePlanet, Kinoplex (GSR) and Araujo.
